5 Things to Check Before Buying an EFI Digital Printer (From an Admin Who's Had to Fix the Mistakes)

If you're an office administrator, facility manager, or operations person tasked with buying a digital printer for a sign shop, packaging line, or production floor — and you don't come from a print engineering background — this is for you.

I manage purchasing for a mid-size commercial print company. Roughly $500K annually across 8 vendors. When I was asked to evaluate EFI digital printers (specifically the EFI H1625 LED for a new wide-format line), I had no idea what questions to ask. Step 1: Confirm Your Media Compatibility List (It's Not All Paper)

Spec sheets list maximum width and length. But what's the usable width after accounting for margins and registration marks? For the EFI H1625 LED, the printable width is 65 inches on a 69-inch table — but you lose about an inch on each side for gripper edge. That matters if your client wants a 64.5-inch banner.

Also: print resolution. Standard commercial print is 300 DPI at final size. For large-format posters viewed from 3+ feet, 150 DPI is acceptable. The H1625 can run at 1200×1200 DPI, but you'll pay in speed. Know the tradeoff.

Step 4: Ask About Ink Coverage Limits and “Cost Per Square Foot”

This was my rookie mistake: I assumed the printer would hit the media's rated max speed. In reality, ink coverage affects throughput. Heavy coverage slows down the cure time.

Get a cost per square foot estimate for your typical job mix. EFI's LED ink is generally competitive, but if you're printing full-coverage white on clear acrylic, the cost jumps significantly. Ask for three scenarios: light coverage (20%), standard (60%), heavy (90%). The vendor who can't give you this — or says "it depends" without data — isn't ready for a serious conversation.

Step 5: Verify Support for Your Workflow (Mac Users, Listen Up)

A surprising number of administrators ask about "mac printer" compatibility. EFI's Fiery RIP works on both Windows and macOS, but the setup isn't plug-and-play. If your studio runs Macs, confirm that the driver and color profiles are maintained for your OS version. I've seen a 3-day delay because the IT guy had to install a workaround for macOS Ventura.

Also: printer drawing — if you're feeding AutoCAD or Illustrator files directly, check whether the printer accepts PDF/VT or requires pre-rasterization. Most EFI units handle common formats, but the production manager will thank you for clarifying this upfront.

Common Mistakes & Things to Watch For

  • Overlooking substrate weight: The H1625's vacuum table is rated for materials up to 1.6 inches thick, but thin flexible media (like vinyl) needs a different vacuum zone setup. Ask for a demo with your actual media.
  • Assuming LED means instant warm-up: The H1625 does warm up faster than mercury-lamp printers, but it's not instant — figure 5-10 minutes for stable curing temperature.
  • Ignoring ventilation: Even LED printers emit some VOCs during cure. Your shop may need exhaust modifications. Check local codes.
  • Buying more printer than you need: It's tempting to spec the largest model. But the Nozomi C18000 is an industrial line — not for a shop that does 50 banners a week. The H1625 is a sweet spot for many mid-size operations.

I'm not a print engineer, so I can't speak to nozzle head maintenance or ink chemistry. What I can tell you from a procurement perspective: these five checks have saved us thousands in reprints and downtime. Your mileage may vary depending on your workflow, but they're a solid starting point.
